Bromomethylation of aromatics mediated by low frequency ultrasound yielded bromomethylated aromatic rings which are useful synthetic intermediates. E.g., PhMe was bromomethylated with paraformaldehyde, 48% aqueous HBr and glacial HOAc on exposure to ultrasound to give 90% 4-methylbenzyl bromide.
