Catalytic enantioselective methods for the preparation of chiral azaarene-containing compounds are of high value. By combining the utility of copper hydride catalysis with the ability of C=N-containing azaarenes to activate adjacent alkenes toward nucleophilic additions, the enantioselective reductive coupling of alkenylazaarenes with ketones has been developed. The process is tolerant of a wide variety of azaarenes and ketones, and provides aromatic heterocycles bearing tertiary-alcohol-containing side chains with high levels of diastereo- and enantioselection.

Multitarget molecules are considered as an effective way for the treatment of AD, instead of the classic one-drug-one-target strategy because of the multifactorial nature of AD. A variety of studies indicate that several enzymes inhibitors can be useful in the treatment of AD, including acetylcholinesterase (AchE), butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) and monoamine oxidase (MAO). Various substituted quinoxaline-hydrazone derivatives were synthesized, and their activity in vitro were investigated, including AChE/BuChE inhibitory activity and MAOA/B inhibitory activity. Based on the experimental results, compound 5l exhibited good inhibitory potency on both AchE (IC50 = 0.028 ± 0.001 muM) and monoamine oxidase B (IC50 = 0.046 ± 0.002 muM). Molecular modeling studies showed that 5l could bind to the active site of AChE and MAO-B. Taken together, these results suggested that compound 5l might be a potential multifunctional agent for the treatment of AD.

Two quinoxaline-based propanones, 1-[3-(3-methoxyphenyl)-5-(quinoxalin-6-yl)-4,5-dihydropyrazol-1-yl]propan-1-one (Mt-3-PQPP) and 1-(3-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-(quinoxalin-6-yl)-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)propan-1-one (Cl-4-PQPP) were tested as inhibitors of mild steel corrosion in 1 M HCl using both experimental and computational approaches. Both compounds were found to retard corrosion rate of mild steel in the studied medium. Mt-3-PQPP and Cl-4-PQPP exhibited mixed-type inhibitive action, reducing the rate of anodic and cathodic corrosion reactions, as suggested by Tafel polarization measurements. Adsorbed molecules of Mt-3-PQPP and Cl-4-PQPP formed pseudo-capacitive film on mild steel surface in 1 M HCl as proposed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. Adsorption surface coverage data were fitted into the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and the evaluated thermodynamic parameters suggested chemisorption for Mt-3-PQPP and competitive physisorption and chemisorption for Cl-4-PQPP. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses further revealed that adsorbed film of the inhibitor molecules protected the steel from direct exposure to acidic ions. Quantum chemical calculations suggested that higher corrosion inhibition efficiency of Mt-3-PQPP compared to Cl-4-PQPP molecule is due to the higher electron donating tendency of the former. Mt-3-PQPP molecule also showed higher protonation tendency in the acid than Cl-4-PQPP and its protonated form showed better corrosion inhibition potentials than that of Cl-4-PQPP. Monte Carlo simulation of the adsorption of Mt-3-PQPP and Cl-4-PQPP molecules on Fe(1 1 0) surface also confirmed higher adsorption energy for the former.

A photoredox-catalyzed C-H functionalization of heteroarenes using a variety of primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyltrifluoroborates is reported. Using Fukuzumi’s organophotocatalyst and a mild oxidant, conditions amenable for functionalizing complex heteroaromatics are described, providing a valuable tool for late-stage derivatization. The reported method addresses the three major limitations of previously reported photoredox-mediated Minisci reactions: (1) use of superstoichiometric amounts of a radical precursor, (2) capricious regioselectivity, and (3) incorporation of expensive photocatalysts. Additionally, a number of unprecedented, complex alkyl radicals are used, thereby increasing the chemical space accessible to Minisci chemistry. To showcase the application in late-stage functionalization, quinine and camptothecin analogues were synthesized. Finally, NMR studies were conducted to provide a rationalization for the heteroaryl activation that permits the use of a single equivalent of radical precursor and also leads to enhanced regioselectivity. Thus, by 1H and 13C NMR a distinct heteroaryl species was observed in the presence of acid catalyst and BF3.

This is the first review describing all the quinoxaline-benzimidazole rearrangements as a whole and the new quinoxalinone-benzimidazol(on)e rearrangements in particular when exposed to nucleophilic rearrangements for the synthesis of various biheterocyclic motifs. The scope of the rearrangements is illustrated by way of numerous examples of their application, and in doing so, the review contains over 131 references and covers all of the literature, from the first report of the rearrangement of 2,3-diphenylquinoxaline by Ogg and Bergstrom in 1931 up to more recent examples in the past few years. The mechanisms for the selected transformations are also discussed.
